The Importance of Visioning for Global Remote Teams
The Importance of Visioning for Global Remote Teams – As an organisation grows, it normally becomes rigid. More headcount means more processes and policies. So now the teams that used to get changes done in a day start to move like an 800-pound giant. Metrics and numbers, numbers and more numbers commonly measure its power. Although it’s logical to be data-driven, especially when discussing finances, it is also important to keep the abstract off the wayside. As Stephen Covey said in his book, the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”
This is where your leaders’ understanding of your company’s Vision is tested. When managers get caught up in their SLAs and KPIs, they might get blindsided by doing anything—even cutting corners just to hit their targets and deadlines instead of holding on to why these goals were set in the first place. If you’re wondering where it should come from, of course, it’s still from the founder/s. And how certain heuristics get passed down to the front line shows how effective your leaders’ communications are within their respective teams.
If that sounds vague, here’s a workaround that you can take action on: Don’t just set targets, use Objective and Key Results (OKR). As we all know, a Vision is a goal that you might not be able to reach in your lifetime but at least, you’d die trying. And it can be demotivating for your teammates when they are told that their performance is predicated by their output. So when you present your Big and Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs), make them aware that the key results they need to achieve contribute to a company’s milestone.
Now, let’s look at the perspective of your team. There are times when the morale is low when the dashboard is all red. By reiterating WHY your organisation exists, you will remind them to zoom out and see that a bad quarter is just a lesson for a greater comeback in the next quarter. Point A could be way lower than expected but it only means that there is no other way to point B but upwards. To save you from the pep talk, set a reminder to regularly reflect with the team if you’re still aligned with your business’ north star. Put quotes, words and symbols in certain places (whether online or offline) to start a conversation about your company’s purpose when in need.
